Scandalous failure of doctors to treat ulcers properly continues
Fifty percent of people who suffer a first time stomach (peptic) ulcers are not being tested and properly treated by their physicians, according to the Centers for Disease Control. For several years now it has been known that 90 percent of such ulcers are caused by a bacteria, H. pylori, that is easily treated with antibiotics. CDC says that physicians are not giving their customers the simple and effective tests that diagnose an ulcer. "If we really want to be able to have an impact on some of the illness that is associated with this disease, we need to educate both the patients and the physicians," says Dr. Benjamin Gold of the CDC. Given the massive publicity on the subject, it is a shameless instance of medical malpractice for a physician to not know and implement proper ulcer treatment. Studies are underway to determine whether H. pylori may cause other digestive disorders.
