Most thyroid diseases go untreated
According to a study funded by Knoll Pharmaceutical Co, ten percent of Americans may suffer from thyroid disease but most cases go undiagnosed by physicians.Researchers who conducted the study took blood samples from 26,000 visitors to a health fair. Almost 12 percent of the people who participated showed evidence of thyroid disorder and almost 90 percent of them said they were not being treated.Over- or under-production of thyroid hormones can lead to hyper- or hypothyroidism, respectively. Weakness, fatigue, and anxiety are some early signs of thyroid dysfunction. Left untreated, thyroid disease can contribute to cardiovascular disease and interfere with the proper function of major organs. Individuals who exhibited hypothyroidism showed higher levers of total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol.
